…And I’m Off

Today’s the day! In just a few hours I’ll be heading to South Station to begin my mini-vacation. Along with the immense excitement I’m also feeling reluctance. Although I think that a getaway is just what the doctor ordered (literally, my therapist agreed it was a good idea)…there’s a part of me that wants to resist going.

I think the root of my hesitation is my sadness to leave Matt for 6 days. I thought about this last night and this will be one of the few times since we’ve been together for nearly 10 years that we’ve been apart for this long. And the other two times both took place in 1997 (when I moved to San Francisco 10 days before he followed and when he went to Texas for his father’s funeral). So, this will be our longest separation from each other in 7 years…and, yes, I’m scared.

On the other, hand, I really do think it will be good for us. I mean, after the horrible past year and a half, I think we could both use a break (Matt agrees). It’s funny, based on what’s being written here, it must sound like Matt and I fight all the time. When, in fact, we’ve not really had a “fight” since 1996. We’ve never (not once) yelled at each other. We’ve never yelled hateful words at each other in anger, and we’ve never physically struck each other (hell, I’ve never even had the desire to do that).

Granted, we’ve also not been the King (me) and Queen (Matt) of PDA’s (public displays of affection), either. But I don’t want my readers to think that there is a deeper meaning to my taking a solo vacation. I think it’s something I feel I need to do for my own sake. Besides, we’ve all heard that absence makes the heart grow fonder. And, since I’m already missing him and I haven’t even left the condo yet, it seems there must be some truth to that phrase.

Anyway, I’m off. I’ll try to update my blog at least once while I’m gone (probably Wednesday night or Thursday morning). But otherwise, I won’t be back until next week…hopefully with lots of boring pictures of the New Jersey coastline, Philadelphia and New Hope, PA. Bon Voyage!
