Sparkles…with Sparkles!

Well, by the time this posting appears, it will be Monday, July 5th. But as I’m typing it is just before midnight on Independence Day and I just got home from Boston’s fireworks display.

Unlike most years, I actually ventured outside for the display. Our last condo in Salem had french doors that opened to an obstructed view of Salem Harbor. But it offered a 100% unobstructed view of the fireworks. In fact, in addition to Salem’s fireworks, we could see the fireworks in nearly all of the communities south of us: Marblehead, Lynn, Revere and even Boston. Two years before that we lived in a high-rise along the Charles River and watched them from our living room.

But this year – Matt and I met up with Sven (a guy from Atlanta who befriended me) and his boyfriend for dinner and then fireworks (though, Matt hates fireworks and boycotted that activity). Sven is moving to Worcester later this summer to get his Ph.D. from Clark University. For some reason, in his relentless sarcasm he has nicknamed me Sparkles, so it was quite appropriate that we attended the fantastically sparkling fire works along the Charles River Esplanade together.

Tomorrow, well, today by the time this gets posted (Monday), Matt and I are going to the cinema to see Napoleon Dynamite. Then I’ll continue packing in the afternoon and in one more day I’m all aboard Amtrak. I confirmed my arrival time in MetroPark, NJ with my old childhood friend, Mel (who I haven’t seen her in over a year).

I’m embarrassed to say, but the loser in me is hoping that’s she’s as addicted to Big Brother as I am so that we can watch the season premiere Tuesday night (shortly after I arrive). I’ll be on vacation and I’m already planning activities around Big Brother. Ugh. This happens to us every year in Provincetown, too. We’ll stop enjoying the nocturnal activities in town to go back at the rental apartment on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings.

Sparkles certainly knows how to party!
