Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel

OK, so I don’t have Dreidel, but Randy and I are now in possession of a new toy (well, technically it’s a game). I suppose this could fall under the “they don’t make them like they use to” category. But Randy’s missing luggage finally arrived yesterday and out of it he pulled a children’s board game he played as a child. It’s called “Gambler.”

Yes, toy companies in the 70’s apparently marketed board games about gambling toward children (the box cover shows poker games, lottery tickets, and slot machines). I love it! I do miss those days where over-protective, politically-correct boneheads didn’t ruin everything with knee pads, helmets, child-proof bottles, frivolous law suits, and the silly notion that every child is a winner or special.

I long for the days of urban legends about Pop Rocks killing people when mixed with soda, and break-dancers dying while spinning on their heads. I miss competitions where there were clearly defined winners (1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, Honorable Mention). None of this “everybody gets a certificate of completion” crap. Kids need to learn to lose. This sense of entitlemend needs to stop. Life isn’t fair…start learning that when you’re young.

Anyway, on a related note, last night was Scrabble night with Randy and Deano. I don’t know how I did it, but I managed to spell “colinear” on TWO triple word scores (since the word was so long, it had tiles on two of them). So, instead of just getting triple-word points, I got six times the word score, plus an additional 50 points for using all of my letters.

Fortunately, Randy and Deano are of the generation where not everybody is a winner and they handled it maturely. Well, Deano did. Randy got a bit testy for the rest of the game (and since this happened on my second turn, there was a lot more game left to play).

LOL…but it was a great work and you deserved the 116 points for it!!!

Not that you’re gloating or anything, mind you. 😉
