It’s Not Over Until It’s Over
Tomorrow’s the big day. At 10:30 tomorrow morning, Matt and I will be signing papers to sell our condo. In some ways, this will be the last tie that holds us together. Don’t get me wrong, we’re getting along fabulously and continue to be friends (and plan to permanently remain close friends). But the selling of the condo will be the last tangible reminder of our past together.
Matt hasn’t stepped foot in the place since December 2nd when he moved into his apartment. I’ve been going back weekly to do laundry since my new place is only a block away. The first time I did laundry there I found it terribly depressing and scary. The place was empty and cold and looked nothing like it did while we lived there. But it got easier as I continued to go there to do laundry each week.
But I did my final load of laundry there on Sunday afternoon and the sadness crept back in. On Sunday, as I realized that this would be my final time ever in the condo, the empty space reminded me of how it looked when we toured the property as prospective buyers. I was picturing us walking through the unit, and how Matt commented that of all the places we’d seen (including other units in this very building), this was the one unit he could see himself in. And as we were moving in, I was remembering him telling me that he was sick of moving and that we’d never move again.
Sigh.
But in the end it’s all for the best. We made a bit of a profit. Matt’s going to be able to care of some debts he’s accumulated. I’m going to be able to invest a bit and hopefully put some aside to buy another condo again someday. And we’re both getting along really well with each other and have both begun the dating process again. So, I really shouldn’t be looking at this situation with sadness, but with optimism. We’re both happier now than we have been in years.
Besides, there is one remaining tie holding us together: a year from now we’ll have to file our tax returns together for one last time (because of tomorrow’s condo sale).

It’s ok Karl.
It’s sad, but as you said, so many things have remained positive and the fact that you both have met someone, and both situations seem to be cool, its just positive growth.
David has a valid point, but that still doesn’t erase the disappointment and sense of emptyness caused by the fact that when relationships begin they do so in a flood of emotion, but when they end, it’s all about legalities and bureaucracy–cold things. What I think is significant for you and Matt, Karl, is that you care about each other and want to make a go of a real and continuing friendship. That’s rare and says a lot about both of you.
