The Germans – and not just their politicians – seem to go gaga at the idea of having a “Dr.” in front of their name. Moreover, this desire is obviously not driven simply by a thirst for knowledge. Nor, for the great mass of doctoral candidates is it the prospect of an academic career – for which a doctorate is indispensable – that is the deciding motivational factor. Less than nine percent of the people who have earned doctorates in Germany remain at a university to continue doing work as scientists, researchers or academics.

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2012-2013, (http://goo.gl/6EqmQ) the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 105 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. Die Technische Universität München* – Doktortitel-Inflation: Lasst das Promovieren sein! – 6

Die Deutschen – nicht nur die Politiker unter ihnen – sind, so scheint es, ganz besonders scharf auf den Doktortitel. Und es ist offensichtlich, dass sie eben nicht allein vom Durst nach wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis getrieben sind. Für die Masse der Promovierenden ist auch die Aussicht auf eine wissenschaftliche Karriere, für die eine Promotion natürlich ohnehin unumgänglich ist, nicht die entscheidende Motivation. Weniger als neun Prozent der Doktoren bleiben als Wissenschaftler an der Uni.
