“Some of Baurmann’s protégés are at the London School of Economics; others are getting a PhD in the United States. A third of the students in the social sciences at Dusseldorf receive a master’s degree abroad, a third remain at the university, and a third start working right after graduating with a bachelor’s degree. Michael Baurmann is particularly proud of the low drop- out rate, which is ‘practically zero’, something quite remarkable in the social sciences. In addition, eighty percent of the students get their degree within the normal time period. The German nationwide average in this area is around five percent.“

Erstaunliche Universitätsreform in Bayern und anderswo in Deutschland – und an der TU-München? – 11
„An der angesehenen London School of Economics sind seine Zöglinge inzwischen gelandet, andere machen in Amerika ihren PhD. Ein Drittel der Düsseldorfer Sozialwissenschaftsstudenten erwirbt den Master im Ausland, ein weiteres Drittel bleibt an der Heimatuniversität, und ein Drittel geht nach dem Bachelor in den Beruf. Besonders stolz ist Michael Baurmann auf die Abbrecherquote von »praktisch null«, die gerade für Sozialwissenschaftler bemerkenswert ist. Und: 80 Prozent der Studenten schaffen ihren Abschluss in der Regelstudienzeit – der Bundesdurchschnitt liegt in diesen Fächern bei etwa fünf Prozent.“

“Each year, for the winter semester, Professor Michael Baurmann of the University of Dusseldorf receives around eight hundred letters from secondary school students who would like to study the social sciences. Baurmann and his colleagues can accept only ninety applicants for their new curriculum, which is a mixture of sociology, political science, and media studies. The professors do not intend that students should go on working for higher degrees in Dusseldorf, however. Baurmann says, ‘We want our success to be measured by the number of our bachelor of arts graduates who continue to achieve in their studies abroad’.“

„800 Briefe bekommt Michael Baurmann zu jedem Wintersemester, alle von Abiturienten, die gern an der Uni Düsseldorf Sozialwissenschaften studieren möchten. Nur 90 Bewerber können Baurmann und seine Kollegen aufnehmen in den neuen Studiengang, der als Mischung aus Soziologie, Politik und Medienwissenschaften angelegt ist. Dass die nicht alle in Düsseldorf ihren Abschluss machen, liegt in der Absicht der Professoren. »Wir möchten uns auch daran messen lassen, wie viele unserer Bachelor-Absolventen im Ausland erfolgreich weiterstudieren«, sagt Michael Baurmann.“

“Students learn all of the basic elements of mechanical engineering, from energy management to materials science, but they learn everything indirectly and in a less formal, more relevant way. ‘That doesn’t mean that we simplify the mathematics required for our field’, says Manfred Hampe, ‘but people understand what the point of it all is’. And most students stick with it: the drop-out rate has been lowered dramatically since the introduction of the bachelors’ degree program. At the same time, there has been a threefold increase in the number of students who spend some semesters studying abroad. ‘Our new program is meant to enable students to adapt to the whole European job market’, says Hampe – and so most of them are quite happy to do without the old, traditional German degree title of ‘Diplom-Ingenieur’.”

„Durch die Hintertür werden da alle Grundlagen des Faches vermittelt, von der Energietechnik bis zur Werkstoffkunde. »Die Mathematik wird damit nicht einfacher«, sagt Manfred Hampe, »aber die Leute verstehen wieder, wofür sie das machen.« Die meisten bleiben am Ball: Die Abbrecherquote ist seit der Einführung des Bachelor-Programms dramatisch gesunken. Gleichzeitig verdreifachte sich die Zahl derer, die für einige Semester ins Ausland gehen. »Unser neues Programm soll die Studenten für den europäischen Arbeitsmarkt fit machen«, sagt Hampe – und für diese Perspektive verzichten die meisten gern auf den bei Ingenieuren so beliebten Diplom-Titel.“

“The field of ‘mechanical and process engineering’ is really the same as the more familiar ‘mechanical engineering’, at least with regard to basic framework. However, at Darmstadt the course of study contains elements designed to generate motivation among the students. ‘In the first semesters’, says Hampe, ‘we stress not only mathematics and mechanics, but we demonstrate what is really fascinating about our field’. Part of this involves having the students do practical work very early. A current project requires building a sea water desalinization plant for Namibia.”

Denn angereichert wird er in Darmstadt mit einem Motivations-Turbo. »Wir pauken in den ersten Semestern nicht nur Mathematik und Mechanik, sondern zeigen auch die Faszination unseres Faches«, erklärt Hampe. Gleich nach dem Formelseminar gehen die Studenten in den Praxisunterricht – Aufgabe dort: eine Meerwasser-Entsalzungsanlage für Namibia bauen.“

“Some professors still try to ignore what’s happening, even though in Germany more university departments than ever before are adopting the new system of bachelor and master’s degrees. The conference of German university rectors figures that the number of such degree offerings rose forty-two percent between the summer and the current winter semester. That means that a third of the degree programs in Germany are now bachelor and master’s programs. At those special German institutions of higher learning that offer courses in a particular area, such programs constitute more than fifty percent of the whole. Although it takes courage to institute such reforms, they pay off, as can be shown by the ongoing, long-term success of the universities that have adopted them.”

„Und das, obwohl derzeit so viele Studiengänge umgestellt werden wie noch nie: Um 42 Prozent, hat die Hochschulrektorenkonferenz ausgerechnet, stieg das Angebot an Bachelor- und Master-Programmen bei den Universitäten allein zwischen Sommer- und Wintersemester. Damit bieten knapp ein Drittel der Studiengänge die neuen Abschlüsse an, bei Fachhochschulen liegt die Quote sogar bei deutlich über 50 Prozent. Dass sich Mut auszahlt, belegen die Beispiele der Universitäten, die der Stifterverband als vorbildlich ausgezeichnet hat. Deren Erfolg hält an, noch Jahre nach der Umstellung auf den Bachelor.“

“Lars Huening, member of an organization that fosters German university development, says, ‘If some universities simply change the labels on their current degree programs, they’ll eventually pay a price. Other universities that have taken a more thoughtful and energetic approach to program conversion will set the standard – and will have the pick of the best students’. Despite such warnings, many German universities turn inward when they convert to bachelor and master’s degree programs. Only a small number of professors take advantage of their colleagues’ experience elsewhere. ‘A lot of them simply shut themselves off from the world outside their own department or their own university, and that is not helpful’, says Huening.”

“ ‘Many German universities are missing a great opportunity’, says Bettina Jorzik. The new EU requirement for bachelor and master’s degree programs in Germany offers what the old German degree programs did not: the chance for German universities to free themselves from the strict guidelines of the various state ministries of education. The EU requirement also offers German universities the possibility of putting together interesting curriculum combinations, such as philosophy and economics. What is most important is that bachelor and master’s degree programs make it possible for German students to study abroad more easily, especially in fields of science and technology.”

Interessante Fachkombinationen wie zwischen Philosophie und Wirtschaft sind dadurch möglich, vor allem die technischen Studiengänge können ihren Absolventen den Weg ins Ausland ebnen.“

However, the effect of the awards has been minimal to this day. Die erhoffte Beispielwirkung allerdings lässt bis heute auf sich warten. Besonders durchdacht reformierte Studiengänge, die seither entstanden sind, gibt es offenbar wenig – weder beim Stifterverband noch bei der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz ist ein leuchtendes Beispiel bekannt.“

“Very few German universities are as imaginative as Bayreuth when it comes to instituting the bachelor’s degree, newly required by the European Union. Bettina Jorzik, member of an organization of German charitable foundations, complains that most German universities ‘after six semesters, simply end the current uniquely German way of organizing a degree program and call that their bachelor’s degree. They make no effort at all to create something new’.”
