Continuation of the letter of last week (from an article on the World Socialist Website: “Der Tod des sechsjaehrigen Joseph Abdulla”, by Dietmar Henning, 30 November 2000, www.wsws.org/de/2000/nov2000/jose-n30.shtml):

“Heitmann’s successor, Manfred Kolbe, also a member of the Christian Democratic Union, recommended that the town of Sebnitz sue the newspaper ‘Bild’ for damages, because it was ‘Bild’ that first wrote a story about the boy Joseph’s case. That such a statement by the Minister of Justice, who is the public prosecutor’s superior, would strengthen neither the public prosecutor’s motivation to investigate the case nor the readiness of witnesses to make any further statements is obvious. Such behavior during an ongoing investigation borders on obstruction of justice or the crime of aiding the perpetrator or perpetrators of an offense by preventing their prosecution.”

„Heitmanns Nachfolger Manfred Kolbe (CDU) hat am vergangenen Montag der Stadt Sebnitz empfohlen, Schadenersatzforderungen gegen die Bild-Zeitung zu stellen, die den Fall ins Rollen gebracht hat. Dass eine solche Äußerung des Justizministers, des weisungsberechtigten Vorgesetzten der Staatsanwaltschaft, weder den Ermittlungseifer der Staatsanwälte noch die Aussagebereitschaft der Zeugen stärkt, versteht sich von selbst. Mitten in einem offenen Verfahren grenzt sie an Strafvereitelung.”

According to Thomas Jurk, parliamentary leader of the Social Democrats in Saxony, soon after Joseph’s death the government of Saxony was also informed that there had not been a swimming pool accident but a murder carried out by the right wing. Jurk referred to a letter that had been written by the late Joachim Richter, who was a member of the legislature in Saxony. The letter was sent to the then Christian Democrat minister of justice in Saxony, Steffen Heitmann, who ignored it.

„Nach Informationen des sächsischen SPD-Landtagsfraktionsvorsitzenden Thomas Jurk war auch die sächsische Landesregierung schon bald nach dem Tode Josephs darüber informiert worden, dass es sich nicht um einen Badeunfall, sondern um einen durch Rechte verübten Mord handele. Jurk verwies auf ein Schreiben des inzwischen verstorbenen Landtagsabgeordneten Joachim Richter an den damaligen Justizminister Steffen Heitmann (CDU), der aber diese Hinweise ignorierte“.

“The young man who threatened the television team also received support, in a sense, from Saxony’s Minister President Kurt Biedenkopf, who told the press there were indications right-wing extremists were being paid by the media to create the kind of scene the man had made. Spiegel-TV, one of Germany’s most reliable broadcasters, whose reporters had taped the scene, contemptuously rejected Biedenkopf’s assertion.

“Even the reaction of one of Germany’s main political parties, the Christian Democratic Union, in the Sebnitz city council and throughout the state of Saxony could only have strengthened the self-confidence of the right-wingers. Three years before this article was written, indications that Joseph had been murdered reached the highest levels of the town government. These indications, however, were all rejected as unfounded, and anyone who made such accusations was dismissed as a ‘nutcase’.”

„Er bekam ebenfalls Schützenhilfe von Ministerpräsident Biedenkopf. Es gebe Hinweise, erklärte dieser der Presse, dass die Rechten für solche Auftritte von den Medien bezahlt würden – ein Vorwurf den Spiegel-TV, das die Szenen gedreht hatte, mit Verachtung zurückwies.

Auch die Reaktion der in Stadtrat und im Land dominierenden CDU kann das Selbstbewusstsein der Rechten nur stärken. Hinweise auf eine Mordtat hatten vor drei Jahren natürlich auch das Rathaus erreicht. Dort wurden aber alle Hinweise darauf abgewiesen und diejenigen, die diese Vorwürfe vorbrachten, als ‚Spinner’ abgetan.“

“The Kantelberg-Abdulla family has been living in fear of right-wing extremists since the death of their boy Joseph. They have received threatening telephone calls: ‘You’re next’. Doors were locked and windows barred at their house in Sebnitz. They never wanted to answer the door.

“When the case became known, the right-wing mob openly threatened the family in the presence of the media. Anyone who became involved on the side of the family was also threatened. Once a young man stood in front of the Abdullas’ windows and yelled, ‘Tomorrow you die’, while television cameras recorded the scene. The television crew talked to him and tried to force him to be quiet. He then screamed at the reporters and looked as though he expected them all simply to leave.”

„Die Familie Abdulla lebt seit dem Tode Josephs in Angst vor den Rechten. Sie wurde telefonisch bedroht: ‚Ihr seid die Nächsten’. Türen und Fenster ihres Hauses sind verriegelt, man geht nur ungern vor die Tür.

Nach Bekannt werden des Falles bedrohte der rechte Mob im Beisein der Medien unverhüllt die Familie und alle, die ihre Nase in diese Angelegenheit stecken. So schrie vor laufender Fernsehkamera ein Jugendlicher vor dem Fenster der Abdullas: ‚Morgen wirst du sterben’. Das Fernsehteam, das ihn darauf ansprach, versuchte er einzuschüchtern. Er brüllte die Reporter an und erwartete offensichtlich ein Zurückweichen des Teams.“
