Dear Mr. Graf, dear friends,
My friend continued reading the transcript of the interrogation of Daniel Steiner:
“Question: When the money was paid, was a sworn statement made and written down?
“Answer: (The witness nodded.)
“Question: And that happened the first time it was written down?
“Answer: No, not then, the second or third time.
“Question: Second or third time? Was there money involved every time that kind of a sworn statement was taken?
“Answer: No, but I always got some candy or something.
“Question: You got candy for that? And who said that you should give the names?
“Answer: Frau Kantelberg and then Mr. Abdulla.
“Question: Did he tell you exactly which names you should say?
“Answer: Not exactly, but they simply mentioned the names and when I said, ‘I don’t know the people,’ they said, ‘You know them and you say it was them.’ And then they wrote that down.
“Question: They gave out the names to you and you had to know them?
“Answer: Well, uh.
“Question: That’s what we gather from your words. How did you behave toward Frau Kantelberg? Did you ever say, ‘No, I won’t do that’ or ‘No, that’s something I can’t do’? How did the Kantelbergs behave?
“It sounds to me,” another friend said, shaking her head, “as if the boy got money and then simply lied.”
My friend smiled: “I don’t think it’s that simple. First, don’t forget that it was the parents who gave me this transcript. They’re not afraid of having everybody know about these statements. Secondly, I haven’t read the whole transcript to you yet. There’s a lot more.”

Sehr geehrter Herr Graf, sehr geehrte Freunde,
Mein Bekannter fuhr fort, das Protokoll von Daniel Steiners Vernehmung vorzulesen:
„Frage: Wurde damals schon, als das Geld gezahlt wurde, eine eidesstattliche Erklärung abgegeben und niedergeschrieben?
Antwort: (Nicken)
Frage: Das war also, als das das erste Mal niedergeschrieben wurde?
Antwort: Nee, das war das noch nicht, zweite oder dritte Mal.
Frage: Zweite oder dritte Mal? Hat es bei jedem Male Geld gegeben, wenn so eine eidesstattliche Erklärung geschrieben wurde?
Antwort: Nee, aber da habe ich immer so Bonsel gekriegt und so.
Frage: Bonsel dafür gekriegt? Und wer hat gesagt, du sollst die Namen sagen?
Antwort: Die Frau Kantelberg und eben dann der Abdulla.
Frage: Hat der dir direkt die Namen gesagt, die du sagen sollst?
Antwort: So direkt nicht, aber die haben die Namen einfach gesagt und wo ich gesagt habe: ‚Ich kenne die Leute nicht’, da haben die gesagt, ‚Du kennst die und du sagst das, dass die das waren“. Und da haben die das aufgeschrieben.
Frage: Die haben dir die Namen vorgegeben und du hast die zu kennen?
Antwort: Nu.
Frage: So deinen Worten zu entnehmen. Wie haben Sie sich der Kantelberg gegenüber verhalten? Hast du mal gesagt, nein ich mach das nicht oder das kann ich nicht? Wie haben sie sich dann verhalten die Kantelbergs?“
„Es hört sich für mich an“, sagte eine andere Bekannte, mit einem Kopfschütteln, „als der Junge Geld bekommen und dann einfach gelogen hat“.
Mein Freund lächelte. „Ich glaube, es ist nicht so einfach. Erstens, vergiss nicht, dass es die Eltern waren, die mir dieses Protokoll gegeben haben. Diese haben keine Angst davor, dass diese Aussagen des Jungen bekannt werden. Zweitens, ich habe Ihnen noch nicht das ganze Protokoll vorgelesen. Es gibt noch viel mehr“.
