Continuation of the letter of last week (from an article on the World Socialist Website: “Der Tod des sechsjaehrigen Joseph Abdulla”, by Dietmar Henning, 30 November 2000, www.wsws.org/de/2000/nov2000/jose-n30.shtml):

“The German neo-Nazi party known as the NPD (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands) has about 1000 members in the state of Saxony. This is a higher membership figure than in most other German states. The party is represented on the Sebnitz city council by Johannes Mueller, a physician. The party received 6.5 percent of the vote in the last city elections. The surrounding area, known as the ‘Saechsische Schweiz’ or the ‘Switzerland of Saxony’, is the stronghold of neo-Nazi activities. A group known as ‘Skinheads Saechsische Schweiz’ is reputed to be the best organized and also – as a police raid recently demonstrated – a heavily-armed and militant Nazi group. An association called the ‘White Warrior Crew Sebnitz’, a group close to the NPD, is active in Sebnitz itself.”

„Die NPD hat in Sachsen mit rund 1000 Mitgliedern einen ihrer stärksten Landesverbände und ist in Sebnitz mit dem Arzt Johannes Müller im Stadtrat vertreten. Sie erhielt bei der Kommunalwahl 6,5 Prozent. Die Sächsische Schweiz gilt als Hochburg neonazistischer Umtriebe; die “Skinheads Sächsische Schweiz” gelten als bestorganisierte – und wie jüngste eine Razzia zeigte: schwerbewaffnete – militante Nazigruppe. Auch in Sebnitz selbst ist mit der “White Warrior Crew Sebnitz” eine NPD-nahe Kameradschaft tätig.“

“Renate Kantelberg has indignantly rejected the idea that witnesses were bought. On the contrary, she said, she had impressed upon all the witnesses that they must not say anything that they could not remember exactly. She said that at most she had given them a package of cough drops or a packet of cigarettes.

“Exactly what happened on 13 June 1997 at the Sebnitz swimming pool cannot at present be determined, and probably never will be, since the Dresden chief public prosecutor now retains all control over any investigations. However, no one can ignore the fact that the neo-Nazis continue to carry on their atrocious activities in Sebnitz and feel that they are stronger than ever, especially since the former Minister-President of Saxony, Kurt Biedenkopf, while still in office, made his statement casting doubt on the idea that the circumstances of Joseph’s death were anything other than an accident.”

„Renate Kantelberg hat den Verdacht, Zeugenaussagen seien gekauft worden, mit Empörung zurückgewiesen. Sie habe den Zeugen im Gegenteil eingeschärft, nichts auszusagen, woran sie sich nicht genau erinnern können, und ihnen zum Dank höchstens eine Packung Hustenbonbons oder eine Päckchen Zigaretten geschenkt.

Was am 13. Juni 1997 im Freibad Sebnitz genau geschehen ist, lässt sich gegenwärtig nicht eindeutig feststellen und wird, nachdem die Generalstaatsanwaltschaft in Dresden die Ermittlungen wieder an sich gezogen hat, möglicherweise auch nie festzustellen sein. Dass aber Neonazis in dieser Stadt ihr Unwesen treiben und sich nach dem Auftreten Biedenkopfs noch stärker fühlen werden, lässt sich nicht übersehen.“

“The accusation that Renate Kantelberg put words in the mouths of the witnesses is hardly comprehensible. The investigating authorities not only have signed statements, but they also have hours of audio and video recordings. Moreover, it is indisputable that the police investigation of Joseph’s death was sloppily done and that numerous leads were not pursued, even though the suspicion that a crime had been committed was widespread, right from the beginning.”

„Auch der Vorwurf, die Aussagen seien den Zeugen durch Renate Kantelberg in den Mund gelegt worden, ist kaum nachvollziehbar, lagen den Ermittlungsbehörden doch nicht nur die unterschriebenen Aussagen, sondern auch stundenlange Tonband- und Videomitschnitte vor. Es ist zudem unbestritten, dass die Polizei nach dem Tode Josephs schlampig ermittelt hat und zahlreichen Hinweisen nicht nachgegangen ist, obwohl der Verdacht eines Verbrechens von Anfang an in der Luft lag.“

“The statement by the chief public prosecutor in Dresden, who had by this time terminated the original investigation into the Joseph Abdulla case, is full of blatant errors. There is no mention of the fact that the main witness against the accused, who on 16 October had repeated his statements in sworn testimony before a judge in a cross-examination that lasted four hours, completely retracted that testimony before the local district attorney only five weeks later. Couldn’t the climate of intimidation that had prevailed in Sebnitz since the case became known have played a role here?”

„Die Erklärung der Dresdener Generalstaatsanwaltschaft, die bereits die ursprünglichen Ermittlungen im Fall Joseph Abdulla eingestellt hatte, strotz von offensichtlichen Widersprüchen. So ist nicht einzusehen, weshalb der Hauptbelastungszeuge, der noch am 16. Oktober seine Aussagen in einer vierstündigen richterlichen Vernehmung bestätigt hatte, nur fünf Wochen später vor der Staatsanwaltschaft völlig umgekippt sein soll. Könnte hier nicht das Klima der Einschüchterung, das seit dem Bekannt werden des Falles in Sebnitz herrscht, eine Rolle gespielt haben?“
