Art Should Be Viewed from a Distance

Our
respect for Cristo as a concept has always been heightened by the
fact that Cristo as an artist has left us lukewarm
at best. Scale and scope are elements to be reckoned with, but are no
substitute for content and technique.

Nevertheless, we have watched with great interest his latest project
to turn Central Park into a work of conceptual art, which of course is
what it has ALWAYS been, since, well, since its conception. In this case,
our interest in the media buzz and coverage around the installation has
been more intense than in the installation itself.  We haven’t even
seen any worthy photos of the whole deal until this
one
, brought to our attention
by indefatigablearchivist
j of scratchpad fame.

This is a thumbnail (10%) of a fantastic satellite photo of Central
Park taken yesterday in which you can clearly see the billowy arches
arrayed along the pathways through the park.  The full
resolution photo
(linked to the thumbnail) is 3696 x 4420 pixels
and weighs in at 46 MB, so those sans broadband be prepared for a download
delay. But
it’s a beautiful image.

Thanks for the tip, j.
