This one will tickle my students, six of whom are Japanese lawyers. Yesterday United Airlines flight 1184 en route to Dayton, Ohio was abruptly turned around in midflight and returned to Chicago’s O’Hare airport. Turns out that a passenger found on an empty seat a scrap of paper on which had been written the ominous words “Suicide bomb”.
Well, security in O’Hare quickly identified the author of the note. It was a 60-year old Japanese businessman who was teaching himself English by reading the newspapers. Whenever he came across a word or expression he didn’t know, he would write it down.
In a remarkable show of sanity he was release to go on his way.
