Blogging the Conventions

This story, in today’s Boston Globe, is the first indication we have received that Blogging the Convention is a real possibility – at least for some Bloggers.  Despite our near-desperate desire, position near the top of the Berkman hits list, and our entreaties to the Democratic National Committee, the Kerry Campaign and the Berkman Center itself, we have been met with a deafening silence thus far.  Are we being paranoid, or is there a plot against us? Perhaps we simply have yet to encounter the correct email address to which to send our request. Any help or ideas, dear readers?

Among the media credential applications for this summer’s Democratic National Convention — from the TV networks, newspapers, and radio stations — is the one from 21-year-old Jesse Taylor, a pundit of the self-declared variety.

He may not be a traditional journalist, but the recent college graduate does have a blog, a website called pandagon.net, where his opinions on current events and the press draw 12,000 readers per day. And from the standpoint of Democratic National Convention organizers, that could be good enough. This summer, they’ll grant some of their 15,000 coveted credentials to blogs, the online diaries that link to news reports, post comments from readers, and critique the political process with unrestrained abandon.

I hate to sound like a whiny mother, dear son, but if I understand your blog, Jesse Taylor gets a few dozen more daily hits than you do. As for advice, I’m trying the old fashioned way: earning it by serving as a state delegate and entering the lottery by hetting a list of 40 other delegates to sign my petition. I think it may be a little late to go this route. Love, Mom
