Wikijunior has been quietly developing a number of great books since its founding, and has branched out into many languages.
It needs more editors and commentators; unlike most of the rest of wikidom, its editors are a bit separate from its audience, and its audience is often not active online.

Wikimedia Commons just celebrated its 2 millionth article, an audio file.  I love it.  I can’t wait until its database is coordinated with flickr’s…

rent a village

This isn’t new, but it is news to me : for what it would cost to give every child in a village a laptop, you can rent the village out
for a meeting or party instead.  Apparently the “rent a state” idea didn’t go over as well (the only state available was Leichtenstein), and the domain was sold to a legal firm.

Thamesis overwhelms; the future

The cast behind the lavishly told story of Thamesis — a social and political intrigue set in a world of vivid colors and sound — are more fascinating than the cast within the story itself… they remind me of the early thirteen‘ers, and of Great Big Pants (before I even knew of Worldwide Pants Incorporated).

I can’t get enough. I want the crew responsible for character and clothing design, those responsible for sociology and scientific resarch, and those charged with spicing up the interwoven threads outside the flash but within the site (the brand incubation, the public relations crew, those who loaned outfits and music), in more than living color.

Mad and Prime and Not Gonna Take It

madprime gets ecumenical about efficiency. or at least spherical. now I feel the need for a cheaper-by-the-dozen moment…

from an unexpected different front, Ethan Z points to a disarmingly profound video on the vagaries of oily tumult in Lagos and the profundity of our deep fascination with it. My mouth opened an inch before I remembered how to close it.

Un Computador Por Niño, a project of Chile, has an interesting description of their goals — a “Meta” (how can I not like this?).

I’ve tried to put them in touch with my favorite architect, but to no great effect so far. I see they have a typo in their banner… I should drop them a line.

supersaturation’s sweaty susurrus

there’s nothing like a sticky morass of potentiality or the moist ambience of supersaturated reality to leave one in need of a shower.   sometimes it doesn’t even whisper as it passes.  it’s funny how the feeling is the same whether it’s the sweat of a hard slog or a dusty cloud.

what is the equivalent for arid vacuum?  movement there is often more sure; its danger can be thrilling; and it offers almost nothing.

xu jinglei, the worlds most technorated blogger, has made an AMD ad; it’s pretty good.  It reminds me to give a shout out to rebecca gonzales, in town to visit the office and the M-Lab demos this week.

the term ‘non-profit’ is somewhat misleading… but here are some interesting lists and stats about popoularity of nonprofit’s websites, including Wikipedia, PBS, and Kiva:
