Podcasting – Fad or Future?

How
much longer will podcasting be the hot tech flavor of the week? It’s
catchy name and seemingly unlimited potential, piggybacking on the monopolistic
success of the iPod itself (although as each and every article now points
out, the connection is technically tenuous and non-exclusive) have gotten
"Podcasting" onto the screens and pages of seemingly every major media
outlet in the land. This from today’s Boston
Globe:

”This is technology that gives me a voice I never
had a month ago," Carey said. ”It’s amazing how someone can now
make a cell phone call that can be heard all around the world."

If Internet-based weblogs turned everyone into a potential newspaper
columnist, and digital cameras let them become photojournalists, podcasting
is promising to let everyone with a microphone and a computer become
a radio commentator.

Of all of Dave Winer’s seemingly
inexhaustible stockpile of brilliant ideas, it seems to us that Podcasting
has the highest Buzz
to Impact ratio. Startling disclosure – the Dowbrigade was featured in
Dave’s VERY FIRST podcast – a recording he made as we walked across Copley
Square on our way to the opening session of the Democratic National Convention
back in July. We at the time expressed our firm conviction that Bloggers
should stick to print and that voice entries would never catch on.  Just
goes to show what a prescient observer of Digital  Development the
Dowbrigade really is….
