HGC December Update

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Following is an update from the December meeting of the Harvard Graduate Council from HLS representative Annie Levin.

Brian

I went to last night’s HGC meeting, and here’s my little synopsis:

1.  Head delegates signed up from each school.  (I signed up . . . It’s really just a “communication hub” designation.)

2. The spring agenda was set.  The following projects are in the works:
a) HGC vision statement
b) Web connecting/grad school event calendar project (a centralized location to find daily events at each school)
c) University-wide club collaboration event (a networking and leadership-building event for all the presidents of all the graduate clubs across the university, to help nurture opportunities for collaboration across schools)
d) Cross-registration mentoring program (a program to designate mentors at each school that can help grad students with cross-registration–helping grad students know what classes and professors to take and how to navigate each school)
e) indoor tennis courts (currently the indoor tennis courts are free for undergrads but up to $40/hr for grad students)
f) 5K grad student run on the Charles, to raise money for a charity
g) monthly social events (more speed dating, a Valentine’s Day event, St. Patrick’s Day event, end of the year event)

3. One last idea discussed at the meeting to help facilitate more social interaction between schools was to ask each graduate school to open up one event next semester to the whole graduate student community; it can be an academic event, a social event, a student-government organized event…the HGC could co-sponsor and help with advertising.  Would the law school be willing to do that?

Hark Hours Feedback

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Hello fellow students,

We are writing to seek feedback about the hours at Harkness Commons and the Hark Box.  Restaurant Associates has been in place for about six months now, and at this point they are looking to potentially make adjustments to their hours to reflect the business that is coming in.  We would like to provide RA with some student feedback about the hours at the Hark.  To help us in our continuing efforts to ensure that your needs are fully voiced, we would appreciate it if you would take the time to briefly answer the following questions.  You can give us your feedback by commenting on this blog post or by emailing us at studentgov@law.harvard.edu.  Please make every effort to reply by next Tuesday (2/3) so that we can get your feedback in as soon as possible.

As always, we appreciate your input and welcome any comments or question you have.

Brian

1)  How do you feel about the current hours at Harkness Commons and the Hark Box (the “Hark Box” is the downstairs area that serves as both the Hark Café and Hark Pub)?

2)  When do you most often eat/drink at Harkness Commons?  The Hark Box?

3)  Do you eat breakfast at the Hark?  Lunch?  Dinner?  For each of those meals do you prefer a quick, pre-packaged meal or something made on the spot?

4)  How early/late do you feel Harkness Commons and the Hark Box need to be open to fulfill your needs?

5)  Do you eat at either facility during the weekends?  If so, when?

Cards for Toby Stock

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

The Student Government and Miriam Glaser organized thank-you cards for departing Dean of Admissions Toby Stock. HLS Students filled three poster-boards with comments for the brick-lover, who’s leaving HLS for Washington, DC. Thanks to all who participated, and good luck Toby!

Taping Classes on Inauguration Day

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Some students have contacted us to ask if we could inquire about having classes taped on Inauguration Day so that people are free to celebrate this historic day as they see fit.  As important as this day is, it is also a poltically sensitive request.  The Administration has to be careful about doing things that can be perceived as politically motivated, and we don’t want to put them in an awkward position.  In order to avoid that, we did not ask the Administration to support a school-wide authorization of class taping on election day.

However, we did ask them about other options.  Any professor can have any class taped that they wish, at any time.  If you really want to go to/see the Inauguration, you are more than welcome to talk with your professor and they can have the class taped if they so choose.

If you have any concerns about that, or think that the Student Government can help you with that request in some way, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Student Government Issues Mid-Year Report

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Today we emailed our mid-year report to all HLS students (if you didn’t get one, let us know). The report outlines what we did this semester and what we plan to do next semester. But, ultimately, your Student Government exists to serve you. So let us know how you think we’re doing and what we could do better!

HLS Student Government in the News

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

He’s much to modest to admit it, but our very own Student Government President, David Kessler, was recently quoted in the New York Times in a feature written on Dean Kagan’s nomination to be Barack Obama’s Solicitor General.

You can find the article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/07/us/07kagan.html

Congrats to him!
