In an age of rapid globalization, few lines of inquiry in social and legal studies seem more pressing than the development of the legal profession in emerging economies. The legal profession has traditionally been restricted to geographic jurisdictions. As globalization intensifies economic, political, social and cultural relations across borders, the legal profession finds itself on the brink of fundamental transformation. Emerging economies such as India are at the frontiers of these changes. These thriving markets attract legal talent and business from abroad while global communications bring the providers and users of legal services together. As legal market liberalization broadens, legal developments in emerging economies will shape the debate on globalization.

Mihaela Papa earned her Ph.D. in International Relations and her M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Her academic focus has been on contemporary issues in global governance: her dissertation developed a theory of forum shopping in global institutions; she has taught Global Governance and International Organization at Boston University and co-authored a book on the reform of global environmental governance. Before her graduate studies, Mihaela worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia (Multilateral Section) and completed its Diplomatic Academy. She has a B.A. in Economics-Trade from the University of Zagreb, Croatia. During her residence as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Mihaela is in charge of the Globalization, Lawyers, and Emerging Economies project. She is currently writing an article on the impact of globalization on the legal profession in India.
