On April 25, 2012, ELP was honored to award retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, the author of seminal environmental law decisions including Chevron v. NRDC and Massachusetts v. EPA, with its first ever Horizon Award for achievement in environmental law and policy. After remarks by HLS Dean Martha Minow and Professor Lazarus before an overflowing crowd of students and faculty, students presented Justice Stevens with an award (sustainably crafted from bamboo) and a climate-change themed bowtie to mark his remarkable achievements on the Court and his considerable contributions to the development of environmental law. Following the ceremony, Justice Stevens spoke with Professor David Barron, his former clerk, sharing his perspective on subjects ranging from strategies in oral argument to Bush v. Gore to the changing composition of the Court.
