Where Have All Our Students Gone?

The Dowbrigade’s day job is in danger. After four waves of layoff’s,
we are now the full time Senior Fellow with the least seniority – 15
years.  The problem lies in who we teach – foreign graduate students.
They just aren’t come to the US in the numbers they were before
9/11.  Our enrollemnt has fallen to less than half. Many students
are going instead to Canada or Australia, or studying in their home countries. An
article in today’s Boston
Globe
explains why…

WASHINGTON — Leading educators called on the government yesterday
to roll back
new
security
measures
they say
have
caused a substantial
dip in the number of international graduate students studying in the
United States.

Arguing that the visa process is bogged down by unnecessary interviews
and repetitive checks, the educators said the restrictions implemented
in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, are crisis-driven
and should be reconsidered.
