Securing the Cyber Domain – 2/3
ø
The notion of Cyberspace provides a different view into the connected electronic world. Cyberspace has as its core the physical infrastructure of electronic devices, spectrum, and networked systems. Electronic communications, processing and data storage, when considered together in systems/networks, have become known as ‘the cyber domain’. A tremendous number of services and functions are supported by these cyber systems ranging from Internet-based social media services, to control of industrial systems, to medical, to National defense, and many others.Unfortunately, this great reliance on cyber also affords the opportunity to various bad-actors or malignant intruders to extend their activities into the cyber domain to damage, destroy, and misuse vital resources. These malicious cyber actions run the gamut from denial of service, to theft, and to injection of false information. Computer security techniques are constantly evolving to keep pace with these security threats in the cyber domain, but many challenges remain. This talk will provide an introduction to the cyber domain and evolving cyber threats to security. Josh will discuss how best-practice computer security techniques can fall short. He will also introduce several technical approaches aimed at allowing cyber defenders to keep pace with evolving computer attacks. The talk will specifically focus on real-time monitoring and analysis with a critical mission/business focus and on operating through cyber attacks.”
