Topic 1: Understanding the Nature of Public International Law

A wee word of warning: Some students decide to skip this section as they are keen to get to the more substantive topics listed below. Whilst I admire the enthusiasm, it’s a rookie error, guys…. rookie error. The information in this section gives you the foundations of PIL so that you can start building up a solid knowledge base. PIL isn’t like any other area of law, so everything you’ve learnt about the nature of law elsewhere is markedly different to this. Examiners also like writing questions about the nature of PIL as it usually separates the good students from the bad, so make sure you know this topic inside out before you move on to everything else.
