Controversy over New NHRC Appointment

February 28, 2004 | Comments Off on Controversy over New NHRC Appointment

P C Sharma, the former director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recently been appointed by the Central government as a member of the National Human Rights Commission. This move has been protested by a variety of people and organizations. The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has filed suit challenging the appointment:

PUCL submitted that the appointment of an NHRC member could be done only after obtaining the recommendations of a committee that included the leaders of the opposition in Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

As a result, the Supreme Court has asked the government to respond to this challenge. However, the SC has not stayed the appointment saying both Sharma and the Indian government would first have to be heard. More coverage in Times of India and elsewhere.
