The father of Burail Jail escapee Paramjit Singh Bheora, charged with a role in the assassination of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, fears his son may have been extrajudicially executed by the police:
[The] father of Paramjit Singh Bheora, today moved an application in a local court alleging his son was forcibly taken out of the jail by certain ‘‘high-ups’’ in the UT Administration for the purpose of elimination.
Mr Jagjit Singh (78) has urged the court to register a case of murder, kidnapping, faking documents and criminal conspiracy against the UT Home Secretary, Adviser to the Administrator, Deputy Commissioner and others. The case will come up for hearing in the court of a Judicial Magistrate on March 29.
During the police counterinsurgency operations from 1984 to 1995, the police regularly faked encounters, claiming the detainees had escaped while going for recovery of arms, among other excuses.
The police also claim that the escapee Jagtar Singh Hawara left behind letters in his barracks that demonstrate his intent to wage war on India.
