Police Fire at Kashmir Demonstration

February 9, 2004 | Comments Off on Police Fire at Kashmir Demonstration

Police in Indian-administered Kashmir opened fire and used teargas against demonstrators protesting the army’s alleged use of Kashmiri civilians as a human shield in a skirmish with militants:

Local residents say the civilians who died were captured by troops from a village near Bandipora on Friday.

They say the troops used them as human shields during an operation against militants near the village of Chhattibanbi….

More than 15,000 people marched from Chhattibanbi to the main town, carrying the bodies.

Reduced to Ashes: The Insurgency and Human Rights in Punjab recounts a similar incident when Indian security forces used eight residents of the village Behla as a human shield in an operation against Sikh militants.
