Delhi Chief Minister Claims Demands of 1984 Victims Satisfied

Yesterday, at the Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit claimed that the demands of the victims of the 1984 Sikh pogroms had been met. After this surprising claim, functionaries at the Darbar Sahib amazingly honored Dikshit with a ‘siropa,’ or saffron cloth.
Dikshit made this claim despite the failure of the judiciary to convict any senior politician or police officer involved in instigating the pogroms. And after Dikshit herself placed Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, two of the main accused in victim testimonies, on the Congress election committee this past October.
Dikshit’s government failed to appeal the acquittal of HKL Bhagat in the case of the murder of Darshan Kaur’s husband. Only when Darshan Kaur appealed did the High Court issue a bailable warrant against Bhagat.
If the widows feel all of their demands have been met, why did they threaten self-immolation last year?
In an editorial in the Hindustan Times, “The real face of India,” Prem Shankar Jha discusses the brutality of these pogroms.
