In Investigation in Gujarat Massacre Case, CBI Starts Recovering Human Remains

February 4, 2004 | Comments Off on In Investigation in Gujarat Massacre Case, CBI Starts Recovering Human Remains

For the last several weeks, we have followed developments in the case of Bilkis Yaqoob Rasul, a young woman who was gang-raped during the Gujarat massacre of Muslims in spring 2002, and watched the assailants kill another 14 members of her family, including her 3-year old daughter, two sisters, mother, and two brothers.

Two years after the crimes, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started digging up human remains.  This is the first case from the Gujarat massacre being investigated by the CBI:

In the first significant step towards getting to the truth in the rape and massacre of family members of Bilqis Yaqoob Rasool — they had been declared missing by the Gujarat police — a team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), under orders from the Supreme Court to reinvestigate the case, has dug up human remains.

Highly placed sources said there was strong reason to believe these were remains of the members of Bilqis’ family, butchered while fleeing rioters in the wake of the Godhra incident, but a confirmation would have to await DNA tests.

The same day, Bilqis gave birth to a daughter.

Our earlier posts give information on how the CBI took over the investigation from the Gujarat police.
