Gujarati Indians living in the U.S. have invited Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to lead a “pride rally” in the US, from NY to Los Angeles. They hope this rally will mimic the one he gave in 2002, as his party swept the elections despite (or because of?) its role in the massacres of Muslims in Gujarat. This proposal was raised at a conference in Ahmedabad organized by the US-based Non-Resident Gujarati Foundation.
Despite the evidence against Modi and his party, the Non-resident Gujaratis attending the conference praised him:
The NRIs said they were quite enthralled by the change they witnessed in their state.
According to Prakash Parekh, director of News India-Times, Desi Talk, Gujarat Times and Sher-E-Punjab, a cluster of four newspapers catering to the needs of Indian diaspora in the US: “Earlier, when we visited Gujarat we used to feel vibrancy only on the roads. But now Gujarat has acquired vibrancy in progress.
“When you visit Gujarat now you can see the progress that it has achieved.”
I’m sure the victims from Naroda-Patia would disagree. A few days ago, the main accused returned to the municipality, prompting a flight of victims who feel they will never be secure. Babu Bajarangi was accused of leading a mob that burnt alive 85 people on February 28, 2002.
