Les petites alliées
May 24th, 2013 by houghtonmodern
This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired Santo Domingo collection.
This week we feature a copy of Les petites alliées, by the French novelist Claude Farrère and published in this edition by Éditions de l’Intermédiaire du Bibliophile in 1927. While Farrère’s popularity has declined in the half-century since his death, his novels deal amply in Santo Domingo subject matter. Les petites alliées is set in the French coastal city and military harbor of Toulon; the plot concerns young naval officers living and working there and entertaining themselves with the demimonde. This edition, limited to 705 numbered copies, distinguishes itself with its lively hand-colored aquarelles, including initials, headpieces, and tailpieces, by illustrator Pierre Brissaud.
