“Interviewer: ‘From the time of your arrival, you were aware of the horrors taking in place in Poland?’
“Beitz: ‘Yes, I learned of them very soon. Galicia, where I was, had belonged to the eastern part of Poland, the area that Stalin occupied after signing the non-aggression pact with Hitler in 1939. The NKVD, the Soviet secret police, maintained prisons there, and after the Germans attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, the NKVD killed a large number of their prisoners before retreating. In the prison in Boryslaw, there were only bodies, mainly those of Ukrainians. The Jews had to wash the bodies for burial, and the Ukrainian population beat up a lot of these Jews, as if they’d been responsible for the murders committed by the Soviet secret police’.”

„SZ: ‚Sie haben die Gräuel in Polen fast vom ersten Tag Ihrer Ankunft miterlebt.’
Beitz: ‚Ja, sehr bald. Galizien hatte ja zum Ostteil Polens gehört, den Stalin nach seiner Übereinkunft mit Hitler 1939 besetzt hatte. Der Geheimdienst NKWD unterhielt dort Gefängnisse und tötete, als die Deutschen dann 1941 die Sowjetunion angriffen, sehr viele seiner Gefangenen. In dem NKWD-Gefängnis in Boryslaw also lagen lauter Tote, meistens Ukrainer. Die Juden mussten die Leichen waschen, und schon dabei haben Ukrainer viele Juden erschlagen, als ob diese etwas für die Morde des sowjetischen Geheimdienstes gekonnt hätten’.”
