The Technical University of Munich* – PhD Inflation in Germany: Let the doctorates begin! – 5
When meaningful doctorates are awarded, this represents a gain not only for the recipients but also, as a rule, for science and scholarship, and for the whole of society as well. A general requirement in this regard is usual expressed in university regulations governing doctorates. However, the thousands of dissertations that are pushed through university committees every year do not signify any academic progress worth mentioning. This is not only true of the scandalous plagiarism of people like zu Guttenberg and other “cheat” PhDs. It is true also of the countless collections of absurd dissertations on topics like “Lacerations to the Penis through Masturbation with a Vacuum Cleaner” or “A Discussion of the Legal Status of the Bullet in the Body of a Wounded Person.” Dissertations like that can with good reason be laughed at. The huge undifferentiated mass of dissertations itself, though, is certainly not very funny and does not offer any increase in knowledge at all, even to university examiners.

Die Technische Universität München* – Doktortitel-Inflation: Lasst das Promovieren sein! – 5
Von sinnvollen Promotionen profitieren nicht nur die einzelnen Doktoranden, sondern in der Regel auch die Wissenschaft, vielleicht sogar die Allgemeinheit. In den Promotionsordnungen der Universitäten wird dies in der Regel ausdrücklich verlangt. Aber natürlich bedeuten die Tausenden von Dissertationen, die durch die Promotionsausschüsse der Fakultäten gepaukt werden, oft keinen nennenswerten wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt. Und das gilt nicht nur für die skandalösen Plagiate Guttenbergs und anderer prominenter Schummeldoktoren. Es gibt mittlerweile unzählige Sammlungen unsinniger Promotionen über “Penisverletzungen bei Masturbation mit Staubsaugern” oder die “Rechtslage der Kugel im Körper des Verwundeten”, die immerhin noch für Heiterkeit sorgen können. Die Masse der Dissertationen sind allerdings höchst unlustig und werden oft nicht einmal von den Prüfern mit Gewinn gelesen.
