The Technical University of Munich* – Professors and the Doctorate Scandal: “My Field, My Institute, My Doctoral Students” – 15
In the past few years, though, there has been an increased awareness that doctoral students in Germany have to be better advised and provided with more guidance. Even more important: academics of the younger generation are working in a context that has become more international and more competitive than was once the case. Young professors attach more importance to cultivating their academic reputation by maintaining a respectable list of publications, rather than by simply fulfilling departmental duties in isolation. Interdisciplinary centers are being formed, in which members cooperate as colleagues rather than working at cross purposes as rivals.

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2011-2012, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 88 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. Immerhin: In den vergangenen Jahren ist die Erkenntnis gewachsen, dass Doktoranden besser betreut werden müssen. Wichtiger noch: Die jüngere Generation von Wissenschaftlern arbeitet internationaler und wettbewerbsorientierter als ihre Vorgänger; der junge Professor legt mehr Wert darauf, sein wissenschaftliches Renommee durch eine anständige Publikationsliste zu pflegen als allein durch den einmal erworbenen Lehrstuhl. Die Kleinst-Institute werden auch immer häufiger abgelöst von fachübergreifenden Zentren, in denen Kollegen zusammenarbeiten statt zu konkurrieren.
