The Technical University of Munich* – Professors and the Doctorate Scandal: “My Field, My Institute, My Doctoral Students” – 14
The oral exam for the doctorate, conducted without any external interference, is an important element in the internal autonomy of the German university. The fact that the candidate’s thesis adviser participates in this exam, though, leaves the process open to the possibility of abuse and manipulation. What is more, the other two members of the exam panel are very often colleagues whom the thesis adviser knows well. It is therefore unlikely they would oppose his judgement. In addition, in situations where international standards may be lacking, as often happens in the humanities and the social sciences, no one should be surprised if favoritism or exploitative behavior are manifest, rather than an academically well-founded evaluation of the doctoral candidate’s work.

Zur inneren Autonomie der Hochschule gehört auch die Doktorprüfung im familiären Rahmen. Dass der Doktorvater Gutachter der Dissertation und zugleich Prüfer beim Rigorosum ist, begünstigt Missbrauch und Manipulation. Häufig entstammt der Zweitgutachter dem engeren Kollegenkreis, er wird sich dem Urteil des Erstgutachters kaum widersetzen. Wenn dann auch noch – wie häufig in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften – der internationale Maßstab fehlt, muss man sich nicht über nepotistische oder ausbeuterische Auswüchse wundern, nicht über Gefälligkeitsgutachten statt strenger, wissenschaftlich fundierter Benotung einer Arbeit.
