(NOTE: This report illustrates just how long and persistent German institutional memory can be, and who can embody it, even in cases where there may not be a direct link with a German university like the Technical University of Munich.)
“This is the card file with my cover name,” Heinze says. “Then there’s this card file with my real name, i.e., ‘Richard’ is Heinze. There’s also a card file that records certain activities, that proves that something was handed over from here to there. And here is a card file on reports, where it’s noted that various documents were destroyed.”

“Eine ist die Decknamenkartei”, erklärt Heinze. “Dann gibt es die Klarnamenkartei: Heinze hieß Richard. Es gibt noch eine Kartei, die bestimmte Aktivitäten verzeichnet, die Übergabe von da nach dort nachweisen. Und dann ist hier eine Berichtskartei, wo vermerkt ist, dass Unterlagen vernichtet worden sind.”
