The Technical University of Munich* – “In Germany, Old Secret Police Agents Never Die, They Just Change Uniforms” – 14
(NOTE: This report illustrates just how long and persistent German institutional memory can be, and who can embody it, even in cases where there may not be a direct link with a German university like the Technical University of Munich.)
Joerg Schoenbohm, Brandenburg’s Interior Minister says, “Of course it’s possible for former Stasi agents to now supervise groups of up to thirty officers in our ministry. They’ve all undergone background checks and have become civil servants of the State of Brandenburg, with all the rights and duties that this entails. If they used malicious deception to obtain their current positions, then they will be dismissed.”
Was malicious deception involved, or was it simply a question of politicians who had no interest in finding out what the “background” of these agents really was?
