If an applicant lives in a town in his or her home country that is far from the German embassy, and if financial resources are limited, then just getting to the embassy becomes a challenge. Frol Vladimirov, a sociology student, had to travel 1,240 miles from Sochi, on the Black Sea, to Moscow, in the winter, and then had to stand in line outside the German embassy. “I needed a lot of money for travel and hotel costs,” he said, “and the whole thing took a long, long time.” Even though Frol had applied for his visa early, he missed the beginning of the semester in Germany.

Wenn die Entfernung groß und der Geldbeutel klein ist, kann schon die Anfahrt zur deutschen Botschaft zur Herausforderung werden. Soziologiestudent Frol Vladimirov musste 2000 Kilometer weit von Sotschi am Schwarzen Meer nach Moskau fahren und dort im Winter vor der Botschaft Schlange stehen. »Anreise und Hotel kosteten ein Menge Geld«, erzählt er, »und es dauerte alles sehr, sehr lange.« Obwohl Frol sein Visum frühzeitig beantragt hatte, verpasste er den Semesterbeginn in Deutschland.
