Interviewer: But none of those people had any idea what was going on in the concentration camp?
Zaidenstadt: As a child, if you mentioned at home anything you’d heard, then you were told, “Don’t repeat that to anyone, otherwise we’ll all be locked up.” Once in an air-raid shelter, in the presence of the wife of an SS member, somebody said that there was such a strange odor in the area around the camp, as if people were being cremated. The SS wife got really worked up and screamed, “What in the world’s got into you – saying something like that?” After that everybody kept quiet again.

SZ: Und von diesen vielen Leute hatten keiner eine Ahnung, was im Lager passierte?
Zaidenstadt: Wenn man zu Hause als Kind erzählt hat, was man gehört hatte, dann hieß es oft: “Sag das ja nicht weiter, sonst werden wir alle eingesperrt.” Einmal im Luftschutzkeller wurde im Beisein der Frau eines SS-Mannes erzählt, dass es in der Nachbarschaft des Lagers immer wieder so komisch rieche, so als würden Menschen verbrannt. Da ist die Frau des SS-Mannes regelrecht aufgegangen und hat geschrieen: “Was fällt Ihnen überhaupt ein, so etwas zu sagen?” Dann war man halt wieder still.
