“A year after completing the bicycle marathon to Australia, Timo is twenty-two and sitting in a class on globalisation along with Sophie Hinger and nine other students at Maastricht. They’re discussing, in fluent English, at what point people are prepared to economize on their standard of living for the sake of the environment. Timo says, ‘People in the Netherlands are an example of individuals behaving in an environmentally conscious way, because they know that if global warming continues, their country could be flooded. That’s not an entirely selfless reason.’ Sophie says, ‘So what? It doesn’t matter why people change their behaviour. The main thing is that they change it’.”

Die Technische Universität München* – „Denn das Gute liegt so nah“ – in den Niederlanden – 22
„Jetzt ist er 22 Jahre alt und hockt mit Sophie Hinger und neun weiteren Studenten im Kurs über Globalisierung. In flüssigem Englisch diskutieren sie darüber, wann Menschen zugunsten der Umwelt bereit sind, ihren Lebensstandard einzuschränken. Timo sagt: »Die Niederländer zum Beispiel verhalten sich auch deshalb umweltbewusst, weil sie wissen, dass das Land im Falle weiterer Erderwärmung absaufen könnte. Selbstlos ist das auch nicht.« Sophie sagt: »Na und? Ist doch egal, warum Menschen ihr Verhalten ändern. Hauptsache, sie tun es.«“
