The Technical University of Munich* – the University Workplace in Germany: “It’s Enough to Make You Cry” – 9

At a time when the universities in Germany are being confronted with the politicians’ demand that they become “elite” institutions, the complaints on the part of so many academics is alarming. Competition is putting pressure on professors to do justice to these growing demands made on academic education. If the government’s so-called “competition for excellence” is to function, then that competition has to be carried on somewhat less hectically. Otherwise says one professor, “Teaching personnel will just be burned out” and they’ll all be made to feel guilty, “because they haven’t yet received a Nobel prize.”

*The Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 67 among the world’s universities. That is, for example, sixteen places below Seoul National University of South Korea. (The Times of London, Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2007)
