German “Elite” Universities and the Famous Technical University of Munich? – 1
”At the end of the nineteenth century, German universities were still – for the entire world – model centers of achievement in human thinking. Today, though, the situation looks a little different. In Germany, hardly anything remains of Humboldt’s idea of ‘the basic unity of research and teaching.’ When people speak of the current ‘excellence initiative’ at German universities, what they really mean is a bare-knuckled competition for government subsidies. Perhaps, for German universities, that’s the only way out of the circumstances they find themselves in: the crowded lecture halls, the badly equipped libraries, the whole general crisis in German education. However, going down the road of the ‘excellence initiative’ means that the human spirit falls by the wayside. An essay by Thomas Palzer.”

Deutsche „Elite“-Unis und die berühmte Technische Universität München? – 1
„Deutsche Universitäten galten Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts noch als vorbildliche Denkzentren für die ganze Welt. Das sieht heute anders aus. Von der Humboldtschen Idee der “Einheit von Forschung und Lehre” ist kaum noch etwas übrig. Wer von “Exzellenzinitiative” spricht, der meint einen knallharten Wettbewerb um millionenschwere Fördergelder. Angesichts überfüllter Hörsäle, schlecht ausgestatteter Bibliotheken und Bildungsnotstand ist das vielleicht der einzige Ausweg. Aber auf der Strecke bleibt dabei der Geist. Ein Essay:“
