The Technical University of Munich Is Not a Terror School – 42
“So Murat Kara’s story would be the story of the successful integration of a foreigner into German society, if it weren’t for two details that spoil it.
“There is, for example, the matter of a German passport and naturalization. Kara says that Berlin is his city and Germany his country – it’s become his homeland. For that reason he renounced Turkish citizenship six years ago and applied for German citizenship. However, the authorities didn’t want to give it to him. Because of one trivial detail after another, the responsible bureaucrats kept putting him off for two and a half years. It was only when he threatened a lawsuit that the whole process suddenly went very quickly. ‘Please write,’ he says, ‘that I needed to hire a lawyer, just so that the Germans would recognize me as a German’.”

Die Technische Universität München ist keine Terrorschule – 42
„Murat Karas Geschichte wäre also eine Geschichte über gelungene Integration. Wenn da nicht diese beiden störenden Details wären.
Da ist die Sache mit dem Pass. Kara sagt, Berlin sei seine Stadt, Deutschland sein Land, seine Heimat, immer gewesen. Darum hat er vor sechs Jahren die türkische Staatsbürgerschaft abgelegt und die deutsche beantragt. Aber man wollte sie ihm nicht geben. Zweieinhalb Jahre lang haben ihn Sachbearbeiter hingehalten wegen irgendwelcher Kleinigkeiten. Erst als er mit Klage drohte, ging alles ganz schnell. »Schreiben Sie das«, sagt er, »ich habe extra einen Anwalt gebraucht, damit die Deutschen mich anerkannt haben.«“
