Peter Baldwin
Professor of History at UCLA and Chair of the Donor Board and Advisory Board at Arcadia
Peter Baldwin received his B.A. from Yale in 1978 and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1986. He has published The Politics of Social Solidarity: Class Bases of the European Welfare State 1875-1975 (Cambridge University Press, 1990); editor, Reworking the Past: Hitler, the Holocaust and the Historians’ Debate (Beacon Press, 1990), Contagion and the State in Europe, 1830-1930 (Cambridge University Press, 1999); Disease and Democracy: The State Faces AIDS in the Developed World (University of California Press and Milbank Foundation, 2005); The Narcissism of Minor Differences: How America and Europe are Alike (Oxford, 2009). He is currently working on a comparative history of intellectual property, tentatively entitled Author vs Audience: The Divergent Political Ideologies of Intellectual Property in Europe and America, 1710-2010. Professor Baldwin is co-founder of Arcadia and the Chair of both the Donor Board and the Advisory Board.
Jill Cousins
Executive Director, Europeana Foundation
Jill Cousins is the Executive Director of the Europeana Foundation, responsible for Europeana.eu and Director of The European Library. She has many years experience in web publishing, which are now being applied to the libraries and the cultural heritage arenas. Her past experience includes the commercial publishing world as European Business Development Director of VNU New Media and scholarly publishing with Blackwell Publishing running their online journals service. Prior to publishing she had a variety of marketing and research careers in the information field. These ranged from being the Marketing and Event Director for Learned Information (Online Information) to managing her own research company, First Contact. All of which is very deviant from her first career as a Middle Eastern Map Researcher for the Ministry of Defense. Jill holds a Ph.D in Geography on Sixteenth Century Arabic and Turkish Sea-charts.
Robert Darnton
Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the Harvard University Library
Robert Darnton completed an AB at Harvard and a doctorate at Oxford. After a short stint as a newspaper reporter, he was a junior fellow at Harvard, then taught history at Princeton until 2007, when he came to Harvard as director of the university library. Of his recent books, the one most likely to interest readers concerned with the DPLA is “The Case for Books: Past, Present, and Future.”

David Ferriero
Archivist of the United States
David S. Ferriero was sworn in as Archivist of the United States on November 13, 2009. Prior to his confirmation as Archivist, Mr. Ferriero was the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries. Mr. Ferriero was in charge of collection strategy; conservation; digital experience; reference and research services; and education, programming, and exhibitions. Before joining the NYPL in 2004, Mr. Ferriero served in top positions at two of the nation’s major academic libraries, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, and Duke University in Durham, NC. In those positions, he led major initiatives including the expansion of facilities, the adoption of digital technologies, and a reengineering of printing and publications.
Amanda French
Center for History and New Media
Amanda French is currently THATCamp (The Humanities and Technology Camp) Coordinator at the Center for History and New Media, and her primary professional interest is in teaching digital methods to the next generation of humanities scholars. She was a CLIR postdoctoral fellow at NCSU Libraries from 2004-2006, and she earned her doctorate in English from the University of Virginia in 2004. She is currently at work on a book titled Here is a Verbal Contraption: The Art of Twitter.
Susan Hildreth
Director of the Institute for Museum and Library Services
On January 19, 2011, President Obama appointed Susan Hildreth to be director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The nomination to her new post was confirmed by the US Senate by unanimous consent on December 22, 2010. Hildreth is the former city librarian of Seattle, where she managed the Seattle Public Library, which includes the world-renowned Central Library, 26 new and expanded branches, and a Mobile Services division.
James A. Leach
Chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities
James A. Leach is Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Prior to being nominated by President Obama for the post, Leach was a Professor at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and Interim Director of the Institute of Politics and Lecturer at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Leach’s brief stint in academia was preceded by 30 years of service as a representative in Congress where he chaired the Banking and Financial Services Committee, the Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs, and the Congressional- Executive Commission on China. Leach attended Princeton, the School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins, and the London School of Economics.
Brewster Kahle
Founder of the Internet Archive
Brewster Kahle is the founder and Digital Librarian of the Internet Archive, established in 1996. An entrepreneur and Internet pioneer, Brewster invented the first Internet publishing system and helped put newspapers and publishers online in the 1990s.
Carl Malamud
President, Public.Resource.Org
Carl Malamud is the President and Founder of Public.Resource.Org. The author of eight books, Malamud was previously founder of the Internet Multicasting Service and the Chief Technology Officer at the Center for American Progress. He is the winner of the Berkman Award from Harvard and the Pioneer Award from the EFF.
Deanna Marcum
Associate Librarian for Library Services at the Library of Congress
Deanna Marcum was appointed Associate Librarian for Library Services on August 11, 2003. As president of the Council on Library Resources and of the Commission on Preservation and Access, she oversaw the merger of these two organizations into the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) in 1997. Dr. Marcum previously served as Director of Public Service and Collection Management at the Library of Congress and Dean of the School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America.
John Palfrey
Faculty Co-Director at the Berkman Center; Henry N. Ess III Professor of Law and Vice Dean of Library and Information Resources at Harvard Law School
John Palfrey is the co-author of “Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives” (Basic Books, 2008), “Access Denied: The Practice and Politics of Internet Filtering” (MIT Press, 2008), and “Access Contested: The Shaping of Power, Rights, and Rule in Cyberspace” (MIT Press, 2010), among others. His research and teaching is focused on Internet law, intellectual property, and international law.
Peggy Rudd
Director and Librarian of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission
Peggy D. Rudd has served as the Director and Librarian of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission since October 1999. Her previous library service includes the Steen Library at Stephen F. Austin State University, the Undergraduate Library at the University of Texas at Austin, Austin Public Library, Central Texas Library System, Northeast Texas Library System, the Library of Virginia, and the State Library of Florida. Ms. Rudd has a B.A. in English and Political Science from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, and received her M.L.S. from the University of Texas at Austin.
Maureen Sullivan
Educator, consultant and American Library Association President-elect
Maureen Sullivan is a widely recognized leader, educator and consultant in the library profession. She is a professor of practice in the Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions PhD program at Simmons College and is on the faculty of the Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is the current president-elect of the American Library Association.
Doron Weber
Vice President, Programs at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Doron Weber oversees efforts in Public Understanding of Science and Technology, Universal Access to Knowledge and International Science Cooperation. A sponsor of books, television documentaries and radio shows, Mr. Weber created a nationwide theater and film program. In Digital Information Technology, Mr. Weber supports the Digital Public Library of America, Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, the Library of Congress and the Espresso Book Machine. A new program in International Science Cooperation focuses on connecting scientists and engineers in conflict regions. Mr. Weber was educated at Brown University, the Sorbonne and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has authored several books, most recently a memoir, Immortal Bird, forthcoming from Simon and Schuster in February 2012.
