[October 21, 2011] DPLA Plenary Meeting
Registration Required The first Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Plenary Meeting, convened by the DPLA Secretariat at the Berkman Center for Internet u0026amp; Society and hosted by The National Archives in Washington, DC, will bring together a wide range of stakeholders in a broad, open forum to present the history of and vision for the DPLA effort, to showcase the best ideas and models submitted to the Beta Sprint (an open call for code and concepts defining how the DPLA should operate), and to create multiple points of entry for public participation in the work of the DPLA. Registration for the DPLA Plenary Meeting is free and open to all. We invite all those interested from the general public, the educational community, public and research libraries, cultural organizations, state and local government, the creative community, publishers, and private industry to join us at the plenary meeting. We hope to bring together a broad and diverse mix of participants, both individually and institutionally. Space at the plenary meeting is limited, and although there are capacity constraints, we genuinely seek to welcome as many voices as possible through participation online via our webcasts and social tools. The list of confirmed speakers is below. We will add photos, biographies, and additional participants as we receive them. James Billington Librarian of Congress Jill Cousins Europeana Robert Darnton Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the Harvard University Library Robert Darnton completed an AB at Harvard and a doctorate at Oxford. After a short stint as a newspaper reporter, he was a junior fellow at Harvard, then taught history at Princeton until 2007, when he came to Harvard as director of the university library. Ferriero was sworn in as Archivist of the United States on November 13, 2009. Prior to his confirmation as Archivist, Mr. Ferriero was the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries. Mr. Ferriero was in charge of collection strategy; conservation; digital experience; reference and research services; and education, programming, and exhibitions. Venue The Digital Public Library of America Plenary Meeting will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater at the National Archives. The entrance to the National Archives is located on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, in Washington, DC. The National Archives can be reached by cab or by public transportation: Subway Take the Yellow or Green lines to the Archives/Navy Memorial station. The Archives/Navy Memorial stop is across Pennsylvania Avenue from the Archives building. Bus Metrobuses 30, 32, 34, 36, 53, A42, A46, A48, P1, P2, P4, P17, P19, and W13 stop at the National Archives on Pennsylvania Avenue.
