{"id":532,"date":"2004-02-12T23:53:58","date_gmt":"2004-02-13T03:53:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/2004\/02\/12\/someone-left-the-cake-out-in-the-rain"},"modified":"2004-02-12T23:53:58","modified_gmt":"2004-02-13T03:53:58","slug":"someone-left-the-cake-out-in-the-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/2004\/02\/12\/someone-left-the-cake-out-in-the-rain\/","title":{"rendered":"Someone left the cake out in the rain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1046'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I went to a seminar at UVic&#8217;s recently established <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctheory.net\/text_file.asp?pick=405\">Pacific Centre for Technology and Culture (PACTAC)<\/a> this afternoon to hear <a href=\"http:\/\/leiss.ca\/\">William<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsc.ca\/english\/presidents\/leiss.html\">Leiss<\/a> speak on the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.uvic.ca\/~ctheory\/pactac.html\">Cultural Politics of Bio-Genetics<\/a>.  The afternoon before I had listened to an early-release report on NPR about the Korean scientists who had successfully cloned a human blastocyst, a news item Leiss also discussed at length as biogenetics provided the frame for his discussion.  Leiss&#8217;s discussion took the long historical view: he began with <a href=\"http:\/\/fly.hiwaay.net\/~paul\/bacon\/organum\/aphorisms1.html\">Francis Bacon<\/a>, in Leiss&#8217;s view the early 17th century initiator of the modernist project in science.  The underlying gist of this project is <i>Naturbeherrschung<\/i> &#8212; Leiss used the English translation: &#8220;the domination of nature&#8221; &#8212; but as he advised at the outset of his talk, he is a Hegelian and familiar with Frankfurt School thinking, and <i>Naturbeherrschung<\/i> in any translation is a signature word from Adorno &amp; Horkheimer&#8217;s <i>Dialektik der Aufkl<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I went to a seminar at UVic&#8217;s recently established Pacific Centre for Technology and Culture (PACTAC) this afternoon to hear William Leiss speak on the Cultural Politics of Bio-Genetics.
