It has been &#8220;one of those days&#8221; and I&#8217;m not coping too well with the assorted slings and arrows, feeling put out by incessant bearing and wanting instead to take arms, &#8230;but not knowing how. Not a clue.<\/p>\n<p>So I googled images for &#8220;dark sky black cloud&#8221; and found this perfect picture. It&#8217;s perfect because it makes me think and takes me outside of my immediate mirror\/mental space(s):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caiguoqiang.com\/project_detail.php?id=182\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid white\" title=\"Cai Guo-Qiang: &quot;Clear Sky Black Cloud&quot; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC 2006\" src=\"http:\/\/www.caiguoqiang.com\/imgs\/imgs_project\/2006_met_cloud.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Does anyone remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lil-abner.com\/\">L&#8217;il Abner<\/a>? That comic strip famously had a character I always swore I would <em>not<\/em> become: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lil-abner.com\/familyalbum2.html\">Joe Btfsplk<\/a>, aka <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Btfsplk\">The World&#8217;s Worst Jinx<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">It&#8217;s nothing short of nuts to think of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cai_Guo-Qiang\">Cai<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caiguoqiang.com\/\">Guo-Qiang<\/a> and Joe Btfsplk in the same context, and maybe Adorno would have something to say about my state of <a href=\"http:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Halbbildung\">Halbbildung<\/a>. Yet there they both are, rubbing elbows. At the end of the day, however, when I&#8217;m trying to salvage my dignity, the snob in me turns her back on The World&#8217;s Worst Jinx and instead identifies with all the nicely-dressed people on the Met&#8217;s roof, as they contemplate what looks for all the world like Joe&#8217;s defining insignia &#8230;the black cloud that follows wherever he goes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8230;And then she gathers her accouterments and concocts a half-theory about why her depression is more artsy (see Cai Guo-Qiang) than common (see Joe Btfsplk). (Or maybe a sip of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lil-abner.com\/kickapoo.html\">Kickapoo Joy Juice<\/a> would suffice&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The right picture would, I knew, put things in perspective.
