{"id":2343,"date":"2010-04-30T21:40:01","date_gmt":"2010-05-01T04:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/?p=2343"},"modified":"2010-04-30T21:40:01","modified_gmt":"2010-05-01T04:40:01","slug":"criticism-file-under-learn-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/2010\/04\/30\/criticism-file-under-learn-to\/","title":{"rendered":"Criticism (File under &#8220;learn to&#8221;)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was little, I had a French professor (not a professor <em>for<\/em> French, but a professor <em>from<\/em> France) who was capable of driving graduate students in his seminars to tears. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonathanweinberg.com\/clark.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 10px solid white\" title=\"learn to take criticism\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ahva.ubc.ca\/FacultyPhotos\/guilbaut_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"67\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>French, but educated in the US, he was occasionally flummoxed by Canadian  students who were used to getting polite kid glove treatment and gold  stars just for showing up.<\/p>\n<p>(I sometimes think that politeness has given\u00a0Canadians an edge that allows them to be at the forefront of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ALf2HZsGtGQ\">self-esteem movement<\/a>, &#8230;to the general detriment of social progress. Chronic politeness and an aversion for putting noses out of joint can result in stultification, mediocrity, and overall intellectual retardation. On <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victoria,_British_Columbia\">Fantasy Island<\/a>, where everyone is &#8220;special&#8221; by virtue of living here, the condition can become rampant.)<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, toward the end of one particularly tense seminar, facing a student who  was about to shatter into a 1000 pieces, the professor became very exasperated and burst out, &#8220;You have to  learn to take criticism!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know but that I don&#8217;t feel a similar exasperation these days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I was little, I had a French professor (not a professor for French, but a professor from France) who was capable of driving graduate students in his seminars to tears.
