{"id":1066,"date":"2008-09-30T18:06:56","date_gmt":"2008-10-01T01:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/2008\/09\/30\/another-confirmation-that-cross-use-is-crucial-reinventing-grand-army-plaza\/"},"modified":"2008-09-30T18:12:11","modified_gmt":"2008-10-01T01:12:11","slug":"another-confirmation-that-cross-use-is-crucial-reinventing-grand-army-plaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/2008\/09\/30\/another-confirmation-that-cross-use-is-crucial-reinventing-grand-army-plaza\/","title":{"rendered":"Another confirmation that cross-use is crucial: &#8220;Reinventing Grand Army Plaza&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just came across this piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolhunting.com\/\">Cool Hunting<\/a>, on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolhunting.com\/archives\/2008\/09\/reinventing_gra.php\">Reinventing Grand Army Plaza<\/a>.\u00a0 This bit really jumped out for me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With regal statues and a sparkling fountain, it&#8217;s majestic and \u2014 its function as a busy traffic circle separates the cultural landmark from the surrounding pedestrian sidewalks \u2014 inaccessible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, the traffic arterial (a single-use feature) strangles cross-use within the Plaza.<\/p>\n<p>This echoes what I just wrote for my next (November) article for <em><strong>Focus Magazine<\/strong><\/em>, on the topic of Victoria&#8217;s Tourist District (single-use) working together with other single-use areas (the Legislative Precinct, Beacon Hill Park, the Department of Defense\/ Ogden Point, and the shoreline) to thwart cross-use within the residential district of James Bay.\u00a0 The solution for the neighbourhood isn&#8217;t to strengthen those barriers by making them even more strongly single-use only, but rather to make them more porous, introduce cross-use into the\u00a0 barriers (at least the Tourist District, as the others are too difficult to shift), and thereby encourage cross-use within the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>I had already blogged about this at the beginning of the month (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/2008\/09\/01\/jane-jacobs-on-differences-not-duplications\/\">Jane Jacobs on &#8220;differences, not duplications&#8221;<\/a>), but it really became clear for me in the article I just finished today.\u00a0 Strengthening the single-use areas that encircle James Bay will only increase James Bay&#8217;s troubles within its neighbourhood centre, not lessen them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolhunting.com\/archives\/2008\/09\/reinventing_gra.php\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just came across this piece on Cool Hunting, on Reinventing Grand Army Plaza.\u00a0 This bit really jumped out for me: With regal statues and a sparkling fountain, it&#8217;s majestic and \u2014 its function as a busy traffic circle separates the cultural landmark from the surrounding pedestrian sidewalks \u2014 inaccessible.
