{"id":386,"date":"2010-03-12T13:01:37","date_gmt":"2010-03-12T18:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/tatar\/?p=386"},"modified":"2010-03-12T13:03:18","modified_gmt":"2010-03-12T18:03:18","slug":"maxfield-parrish-revived-in-burtons-alice-in-wonderland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/tatar\/2010\/03\/12\/maxfield-parrish-revived-in-burtons-alice-in-wonderland\/","title":{"rendered":"Maxfield Parrish Revived in Burton&#8217;s Alice in Wonderland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/tatar\/files\/2010\/03\/parrish-daybreak-pub2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-387\" title=\"parrish-daybreak-pub\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/tatar\/files\/2010\/03\/parrish-daybreak-pub2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/tatar\/files\/2010\/03\/parrish-daybreak-pub2.jpg 470w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/tatar\/files\/2010\/03\/parrish-daybreak-pub2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tim Burton&#8217;s <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em> has many scenes of jaw-dropping beauty, and my favorite was an homage to Maxfield Parrish&#8217;s <em>Daybreak<\/em>, a painting that changes color depending on the time of day at which you see it.<\/p>\n<p>I found it fascinating that Burton&#8217;s adventurous Alice becomes a Joan of Arc figure and a dragon slayer, who flees marriage to set sail on the high seas.<\/p>\n<p>Larry Rohter quotes the screenwriter in a film review for the <em>NYT:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Linda Woolverton . . . said that when she began her script, she \u201cdid a lot of research on Victorian mores, on how young girls were supposed to behave, and then did exactly the opposite.\u201d As she put it, \u201cI was thinking more in terms of an action-adventure film with a female protagonist\u201d than a Victorian maiden.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI do feel it\u2019s really important to depict strong-willed, empowered women,\u201d she added, \u201cbecause women and girls need role models, which is what art and characters are.
