In this famous opening idea, there\u2019s really only two ideas. One of them, I call leap. The other one, I call circle and yearn. And it\u2019s important.<\/p>\n<p>(CROSSTALK)<\/p>\n<p><strong>JEFFREY BROWN:<\/strong> Leap and circle and yearn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROB KAPILOW:<\/strong> It\u2019s important you learn these technical terms, Jeffrey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JEFFREY BROWN:<\/strong> Oh, I see.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROB KAPILOW:<\/strong> Circle and yearn.<\/p>\n<p>So, it starts off with this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JEFFREY BROWN:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t learn that with piano lessons, by the way, right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROB KAPILOW:<\/strong> It\u2019s time.<\/p>\n<p>We start off with this big leap. This is a full octave leap. That\u2019s a big leap for a popular song. In fact, producers were worried that nobody would buy the song because it would be too hard to sing this opening leap.<\/p>\n<p>Now, this leap isn\u2019t just a big leap musically. It\u2019s a leap between two different worlds and two parts of the voice. The first note is kind of low down there in chest voice. It\u2019s Dorothy\u2019s troubled reality. It\u2019s Kansas, aridity, no flowers.
