{"id":81,"date":"2005-06-15T22:44:36","date_gmt":"2005-06-16T02:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/2005\/06\/15\/the-mp-and-me\/"},"modified":"2006-04-28T12:33:31","modified_gmt":"2006-04-28T19:33:31","slug":"the-mp-and-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/2005\/06\/15\/the-mp-and-me\/","title":{"rendered":"The MP and Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"a190\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I experienced a moment of panic this morning when I walked into the office and was told, &#8220;The Managing Partner is looking for you.&#8221;\u00a0 Those of you who don&#8217;t work in law firms may not understand the fear those words instill.\u00a0 In most law firms, the MP is given almost god-like status, he (and yes, it&#8217;s always a &#8220;he&#8221;) is to be worshipped from afar and spoken about reverently.\u00a0 Comfortably perched atop the\u00a0firm hierarchy, MP&#8217;s do not\u00a0generally deign to talk to lowly first years.\u00a0 (The MP at my office is actually very nice and approachable, but\u00a0he&#8217;s still the MP.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, my first reaction was, &#8220;Whatever it was, it wasn&#8217;t me!&#8221;\u00a0 My second reaction?\u00a0 &#8220;Run!&#8221;\u00a0 Alas, once I realized (a) how impractical it would be to run in my heels and (b) how uncomfortable it was hiding under my desk, I bit the bullet and called the\u00a0MP.\u00a0 It turns out he wanted to invite me to a WNBA game tonight because he had a couple of extra tickets.\u00a0 Following the generally accepted rule\u00a0that I, as\u00a0the lowliest of\u00a0minions, must say &#8220;yes&#8221; to any request made by virtually anyone else in the office, I immediately said &#8220;yes.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out,\u00a0I am the only one who abides by this rule.\u00a0 I ended up at the\u00a0game with the MP, his wife, and his two kids.\u00a0 Suprisingly, the whole thing turned out to be fun rather than horrifyingly awkward.\u00a0 His family was super nice and\u00a0 they knew everyone\u00a0at the game\u00a0(they&#8217;ve had courtside seats for as long as the LA Spurs have been playing).\u00a0 Plus, I got free food and\u00a0alcohol and\u00a0didn&#8217;t get hit in the face with a basketball (always a plus).\u00a0 At the end of the game, Lisa Leslie of the Spurs came and thanked us (well, them) for making the game.\u00a0 And she gave me a hug.\u00a0 She is awesome.\u00a0 When I grow up to be a famous female basketball player, I&#8217;m going to be just like her.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I experienced a moment of panic this morning when I walked into the office and was told, &#8220;The Managing Partner is looking for you.&#8221;\u00a0 Those of you who don&#8217;t work in law firms may not understand the fear those words instill.\u00a0 In most law firms, the MP is given almost god-like status, he (and yes, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":110,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[171,155],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-81","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-friends-family-and-everyone-in-between","category-lawyering"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/81","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/110"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=81"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/81\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=81"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=81"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=81"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
