{"id":719,"date":"2009-03-16T18:43:08","date_gmt":"2009-03-17T01:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/?p=719"},"modified":"2009-03-17T10:06:22","modified_gmt":"2009-03-17T17:06:22","slug":"baker-to-vegas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/2009\/03\/16\/baker-to-vegas\/","title":{"rendered":"Baker to Vegas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back from a very short trip to Vegas for T&#8217;s race, the Baker to Vegas Relay.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a 120-mile relay race for law enforcement personnel.\u00a0 There were hundreds of teams (each with 20 runners) representing all aspects of law enforcement &#8211; police officers, sheriffs, FBI agents, correctional officers, district attorneys, etc. \u00a0Most of them were from California, but we saw some teams from Canada and one from Hamburg, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The race began at 9am on Saturday morning for the slowest team (the teams started based on their projected finish time) and ended at 9am for everyone on Sunday.\u00a0 T&#8217;s team started at 5pm on Saturday evening but T&#8217;s portion of the race (5.3 miles with a 2% incline) didn&#8217;t start until 10pm Saturday night, so we headed out at 7:30 for a small town 60 miles west of Las Vegas, where T&#8217;s leg started.<\/p>\n<p>It was\u00a0 unlike any race I&#8217;d ever participated in or seen, not only because it was extremely long, and a relay, but because the roads weren&#8217;t closed for the race.\u00a0 Instead, runners run along the shoulder of the road with &#8220;follow vehicles&#8221; behind them to protect them from traffic and to provide light (as parts of the race take place in desolate areas in the middle of the night).\u00a0 It was really neat to see runners and their follow vehicles along the road as we drove past. \u00a0The logistics of getting that many people out there and coordinating that many vehicles for that long a race is mind-boggling.\u00a0 It was amazing how well they pulled it off.<\/p>\n<p>We, on the other hand, did not do such a great job pulling off our trip.\u00a0 We made the trip too short (given the timing of T&#8217;s leg of the race, we weren&#8217;t able to do much in Vegas), spent too much on airfare (we both should have taken a day off and driven) and then waited too long to rent a car (they are so expensive to rent in Vegas!). \u00a0Plus, T was sick leading up to the race. \u00a0All in all, we weren&#8217;t particularly looking forward to the trip or the race, but we had a great time when we got there!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back from a very short trip to Vegas for T&#8217;s race, the Baker to Vegas Relay.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a 120-mile relay race for law enforcement personnel.\u00a0 There were hundreds of teams (each with 20 runners) representing all aspects of law enforcement &#8211; police officers, sheriffs, FBI agents, correctional officers, district attorneys, etc. \u00a0Most of them were [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":110,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[829],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-719","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-away-from-home"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/719","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/110"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=719"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/719\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=719"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=719"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=719"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
