{"id":410,"date":"2006-06-19T15:17:29","date_gmt":"2006-06-19T22:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/2006\/06\/19\/the-things-we-carry\/"},"modified":"2006-06-19T15:25:46","modified_gmt":"2006-06-19T22:25:46","slug":"the-things-we-carry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/sweetpea\/2006\/06\/19\/the-things-we-carry\/","title":{"rendered":"The Things We Carry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s surprising, the weight of things people carry.\u00a0 Sometimes you&#8217;ll see it in their eyes, before they can hide it.\u00a0 Sometimes you&#8217;ll\u00a0feel it in a quick nervous gesture or hear it in a half spoken thought.\u00a0 Most of the time though,\u00a0you won&#8217;t\u00a0know anything&#8217;s there at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you know me, or have ever met me, you&#8217;ll know I complain a lot.\u00a0 Mostly about trivial things.\u00a0 It&#8217;s what I do.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s mostly in jest.\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;ve been\u00a0described as stoic.\u00a0 Also\u00a0in jest.\u00a0 I&#8217;m anything but, except when it comes to things that actually matter.\u00a0 I&#8217;m coming across something that actually matters\u00a0and\u00a0I&#8217;d forgotten how hard\u00a0silence is.\u00a0 Not\u00a0that one has to carry heavy things in silence, but some things are too hard to carry\u00a0if you always have to acknowledge that they&#8217;re there.\u00a0\u00a0You can&#8217;t really talk about it until it&#8217;s almost gone.\u00a0\u00a0You walk around\u00a0with it, feeling its weight at times and ignoring it as best you can,\u00a0until one day\u00a0it feels lighter and you realize you&#8217;re ready to let it go.\u00a0 And\u00a0if you&#8217;re lucky, there&#8217;s someone there to listen.<\/p>\n<p>(Sorry, I didn&#8217;t mean for this post to be as cryptic as it ended up being.
